New research indicates that tougher gun laws may significantly reduce firearm violence in the United States, where more than 40,000 gun deaths occur annually. The study points to positive evidence suggesting that restrictive laws, such as mandatory background checks and child access prevention measures, correlate with lower homicide rates, especially among young people.
In contrast, the findings also reveal that permissive laws, including those that allow concealed carry without permits and stand-your-ground statutes, could exacerbate gun violence. With an average of over 120 firearm-related deaths each day, the researchers advocate for lawmakers to consider scientific evidence in their decision-making processes surrounding gun legislation.
