Researchers at Rutgers University have found that firearm owners are increasingly willing to temporarily store their guns outside the home, particularly when worried about the safety of others living with them. The study indicates that 34% of surveyed gun owners are open to storing their firearms with law enforcement, while a significant number also consider firearm retailers as storage options, reflecting a shift in priorities towards protecting household members.
Lead author Jennifer Paruk highlights that this willingness is rooted in a desire to keep loved ones safe, although many gun owners express concern over leaving their homes unprotected. To support this initiative, experts suggest that installing firearm storage lockers at retailers could further enhance the willingness for temporary storage. Additionally, states are creating online maps to guide residents to local facilities offering these services, which could play a crucial role in promoting safe firearm practices.
