Gun Groups Challenge 1927 Law on Mailing Handguns

Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners Foundation file a lawsuit against the U.S. Postal Service, seeking to overturn a nearly century-old law that prohibits individuals from mailing handguns. The lawsuit, filed in the Western District of Pennsylvania, centers on Pennsylvania resident Bonita Shreve’s desire to send a handgun as a gift to her father, challenging a federal statute that limits this practice to businesses and government officials.

According to the plaintiffs, maintaining the ban infringes on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Currently, mailing a handgun constitutes a Class E felony, with severe penalties, including fines of up to $250,000 and prison time. As gun advocacy groups push for legal changes, they highlight that private carriers like UPS and FedEx also restrict the shipping of firearms, raising questions about equity in shipping rights.
