Supreme Court to Address Firearm Carry Rights in NY Case

This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear the case New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Kevin Bruen, which could significantly expand the rights to carry firearms in public spaces. Central to this case is the question of whether there should be limits on the types of firearms individuals can carry outside their homes, particularly in light of modern weapon lethality that far exceeds historical standards.

For context, the Theoretical Lethality Index (TLI), developed over 50 years ago, illustrates the striking increase in the potential for mass casualties due to advancements in firearm technology. For instance, while a soldier with an 18th-century musket could theoretically kill 43 people in an hour, today’s AR-15 can change the outcomes considerably, as evidenced by recent tragic events like the Las Vegas shooting, where a single gunman killed 58 people in just 10 minutes. This case will challenge the Court to consider these modern implications on gun rights and public safety.
