Newly proposed federally mandated concealed-carry legislation threatens to nullify state laws designed to enhance public safety by allowing individuals deemed unfit under local regulations to carry concealed firearms. Currently, states set their own eligibility requirements; however, this legislation would enable those with violent misdemeanors or lacking safety training to legally carry guns across the nation.
Opponents argue that the measure would set a dangerous national standard, with states having weaker laws effectively determining eligibility for concealed carry everywhere. As of now, 39 states require some form of safety training for permit holders, yet with mandatory reciprocity, individuals from states with laxer regulations could carry concealed weapons in all states, raising alarm within law enforcement and community safety advocates alike.
