A recent analysis reveals a concerning correlation between Wisconsin’s concealed carry law and a rise in gun violence across the state. Following the law’s implementation in 2011, gun homicides soared by 33 percent, with a significant increase in aggravated assaults involving firearms, prompting calls for a reevaluation of public carry policies. Research indicates that the average annual rate of gun-related homicides from 2012 to 2019 reached 2.4 per 100,000 people, 24 percent higher than during the previous eight years, highlighting a troubling trend since the law was enacted.
Additionally, gun thefts in Wisconsin have surged, increasing by 17 percent in terms of the annual value of stolen firearms between 2012 and 2019. These findings suggest that looser regulations on concealed carry may incentivize higher rates of gun ownership and misuse, urging lawmakers to strengthen existing laws. With evidence mounting that similar concealed carry laws nationwide exacerbate violence, Wisconsin serves as a critical case study on the potential dangers of permissive gun policies.
