The Pennsylvania Game Commission uncovers four wild Canada geese that are at least 16 years old during their summer leg banding efforts. These findings highlight the impressive longevity of Canada geese in the wild, where natural mortality and other challenges typically limit the lifespan of many wildlife species.
With a goal of banding around 2,000 geese to monitor populations, biologists celebrated this year as particularly successful, noting that older birds are increasingly rare. Among various recaptured geese, four were initially banded long ago, indicating not only their advanced age but also their ability to survive and migrate across regions, including a bird banded in Pennsylvania that was later found in Indiana.
