Uvalde Families to Challenge Instagram, Gun Maker in Court

The families of victims from the 2022 Uvalde school shooting are set to appear in court for crucial arguments in their lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Instagram, as well as Activision and Daniel Defense. They claim these companies collectively glorify gun violence and have directly influenced the behavior of the shooter, who allegedly honed his skills playing violent video games like “Call of Duty” before carrying out the attack that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.

The lawsuit asserts that these firms disproportionately target vulnerable adolescent boys, providing unrestricted access to content that trivializes firearm use. By alleging that Instagram fails to enforce restrictions on promoting harmful content and weaponry to children, the families hope to hold these corporations accountable for their role in the tragedy. Oral arguments for this case are scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles, marking a significant step in the ongoing legal battle over the implications of media and marketing in the context of gun violence.
