Ryan Saavedra, a father mourning his son lost to gun violence in 2021, spearheads a community mural project in Albuquerque designed to foster healing among families affected by violence. Collaborating with ten other families who have experienced similar tragedies, Saavedra’s art not only pays tribute to lives lost but also aims to spark connections and emotional recovery through the creative process.
With murals emerging in downtown Albuquerque, Saavedra highlights the project’s dual purpose: celebrating the city’s history while also promoting healing among participants. He notes that the artistic collaboration has led to personal transformations, with participants sharing their stories and finding solace together. The project is set to complete between the New Mexico State Fair and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, culminating in a mural that will honor the names of victims shared by their families.
