The updated regulations, which align with New York State’s new licensing standards effective September 1, eliminate the “proper cause” requirement that previously restricted many applicants from obtaining a permit.
Alongside simplifying the application process by allowing online submissions, the NYPD now mandates that applicants provide four character references and details of their social media accounts from the past three years. Additionally, applicants must complete an in-person interview and pass a firearms safety course, reflecting a shift to stricter vetting procedures even as overall accessibility increases.
