ATF Targets Gun Trafficking in South Florida

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has launched a new anti-gun trafficking initiative in South Florida amid increasing gun violence in the area. The campaign is centered around combating “straw purchasing,” a practice where individuals buy firearms on behalf of those who are unable to legally acquire them, potentially placing guns in the hands of criminals and exacerbating community safety concerns.

Local and federal officials emphasize the campaign’s urgent significance, noting that firearms purchased through these illegal means often find their way into violent crimes. ATF Deputy Director Rob Cedaka highlights the extensive firearms trafficking network that operates in regions stretching from Miami to Orlando and beyond, with illegal guns frequently ending up in the Caribbean and Mexico. This initiative is part of the broader “Don’t Lie for the Other Guys” campaign, aiming to educate both firearm buyers and the community on the deadly consequences of these illicit transactions.
