Federal authorities have launched the “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign in Miami, aimed at raising awareness about the illegal practice of straw purchasing firearms. This monthlong initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Department of Justice, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which stresses the serious legal repercussions of buying a gun for someone ineligible to own one—potentially leading to 15 years in prison.
The campaign promotes its message through widespread advertising, including 20 billboards and 530 radio spots, designed to educate the public and firearm retailers about the felony crime of straw purchasing. Launched 25 years ago, this long-standing program provides crucial resources to prevent illegal sales, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure that firearms do not end up in the hands of those who should not possess them.
