Holyoke Honors Myriam Miranda Amid Gun Violence Concerns

This Saturday, the Holyoke community will come together to honor Myriam Miranda, a beloved mother and community advocate who died from gun violence in 2003. The 3-on-3 “Stop the Violence” basketball tournament, organized by her son Reynaldo López, aims not just to commemorate Miranda but also to tackle the broader issue of escalating gun violence in Hispanic communities, which has seen a surge of 5,747 victims in 2023 alone.

Miranda’s legacy lives on through this annual event, drawing around 40 teams from various regions to support the cause. As concerns about gun marketing strategies targeting Hispanic populations grow, city officials emphasize the importance of remembering individuals like Miranda, whose tragic story symbolizes a larger societal issue that continues to affect communities nationwide.
