Lewiston City Council Rejects Divestment from Weapons Firms

The Lewiston City Council narrowly rejects a proposal to divest city funds from weapons manufacturers, with a 4-3 vote culminating in a tie-breaking decision by Mayor Carl Sheline. Councilor Josh Nagine, who supported the proposal, argues that investing in companies contributing to global and local gun violence contradicts the city’s values and moral responsibilities.

Opponents of the measure, however, contend that such social issues should not intersect with city finances, labeling the proposal as “performative” and burdensome for city staff. The intense discussion unfolded late into the night during one of the council’s longest meetings in recent memory, reflecting the sharp divide among residents and council members about the ethical implications of civic investments in military-related industries.
