Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has issued an order for flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Lorain police officer Phillip Wagner, who was fatally shot in an ambush on July 23. The tribute recognizes Wagner’s service and will remain in effect until sunset on the day of his funeral, with flags at all public buildings in Lorain County and key state buildings in Columbus honoring his sacrifice.
Wagner, 35, was one of three officers targeted during the ambush while they stopped for lunch, leaving him critically injured and ultimately leading to his death. Tragically, Officer Peter Gale also suffered injuries but is recovering, while Officer Brent Payne remains in serious condition. The community mourns as they reflect on the dangers law enforcement officers face daily in their service to the public.
