The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is considering significant changes to deer hunting regulations for the 2026-27 season, including a possible extension of the white-tailed deer season by up to 25 days in certain counties. The proposal aims to increase antlerless deer harvests in response to growing population trends, with the intention to manage herds effectively and address concerns related to Chronic Wasting Disease, also known as “zombie deer disease.”
Among the potential changes, hunters in Madison County could see their season expanded by 25 days, while other counties may experience similar increases. Public comments are open until September 15, 2025, allowing residents to voice their opinions on the proposed regulations aimed at enhancing deer management and hunting opportunities across Western North Carolina.
