Benito Lopez, a 30-year-old San Diego resident, has pleaded guilty in federal court to serious charges related to drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. Lopez admitted to possessing over two kilograms of cocaine intended for distribution while also being aware of his restrictions stemming from prior felony convictions that prohibit him from owning a firearm.
As part of his plea agreement, Lopez will forfeit nearly $60,000 in drug proceeds seized from his home, revealing the extent of his drug operation. Under the scrutiny of the San Diego Police Department’s Gang Suppression Unit, he was found with cocaine and a loaded weapon during a traffic stop and subsequent police search, leading to a potential prison sentence of up to 55 years. This case is part of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative aimed at curbing gun violence and enhancing community safety.
