The Wisconsin State Assembly passes a bill granting residents increased legal protection when using force against intruders in their homes. Dubbed the “castle doctrine,” this proposal shifts the burden of proof to prosecutors, allowing individuals greater assurance that they will not face criminal prosecution or civil liability for self-defense actions if an intruder unlawfully enters their property.
Under the new measure, residents can act without needing to retreat and are presumed to have immunity unless proven otherwise by authorities, a principle currently supported in 29 other states.
