This past weekend, advocates against gun violence in Georgia organized a town hall and a parade in Athens to spotlight the pressing issue. Local officials, including Athens’ state representative Spencer Frye, discussed proposed “common sense” gun laws aimed at enhancing firearm safety, such as requiring safe storage and background checks. These measures are essential as Georgia ranks 15th nationally in firearm-related deaths, highlighting the urgent need for legislative action.
The events continued with the second annual ‘Rally Up Guns Down’ parade, hosted by The Handy Foundation, Inc., where vehicles symbolically marched against gun violence. Founder Lamar Handy emphasized the impact of gun violence on the Black community, urging attendees to remain vigilant about advocacy beyond the immediate aftermath of tragedies. In a show of solidarity, Athens-Clarke County officials declared the fourth Sunday in July as ‘Rally Up Guns Down Awareness Day’ to further inspire community engagement against gun violence.
