Approximately 1,450 Chicago police officers have ceased using the Sig Sauer P320 handgun due to safety concerns linked to accidental discharges. Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara contacted Police Superintendent Larry Snelling in April, advocating for a ban on the model after reports indicated hundreds of injuries from unintended trigger pulls, raising alarms about officer and public safety.
The Chicago Police Department has initiated a phase-out process, with over 1,350 officers already compliant. New recruits are no longer permitted to use the P320, which is facing scrutiny from other departments as well; Milwaukee and Denver have already barred its use. In response to these developments, Sig Sauer insists their firearm is safe, challenging the FOP’s claims in court and pointing to extensive testing by military and law enforcement agencies.
