A man who allegedly displayed an imitation firearm near Andrew’s Diner in Great Kills was fatally shot by an off-duty NYPD officer during a confrontation on Friday evening. Responding to a 911 call reporting the man with a gun, the officer spotted him displaying the weapon and, after issuing multiple orders to drop it, opened fire when the suspect aimed the imitation gun at the officers.
The shooting occurred around 8:20 p.m., prompting a significant police response, with officers blocking off the area for investigation. While the identity of the 44-year-old suspect has not been released, police are exploring whether the incident may have been a case of “suicide by cop.” NYPD officials noted that no civilians were injured during the encounter, emphasizing the efforts of the off-duty officers to protect public safety.
