Minnesota law enforcement is increasingly utilizing the ‘red flag’ law, formally known as the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, to combat gun violence. In the first seven months of 2025, authorities filed more than 280 petitions to temporarily remove guns from individuals deemed at risk, surpassing the total for all of 2024 and with only 5% being rejected by judges.
This surge in petitions is partly due to enhanced training for officers by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, aimed at increasing awareness around the law, which has already shown promise in reducing firearm-related suicides in other states. With Governor Tim Walz noting a general rise in gun deaths, advocates assert that these protective measures could avert further tragedies in Minnesota.
