A 44-year-old man, Jesse Campbell, is fatally shot by an off-duty police officer in Staten Island after allegedly pointing a realistic-looking BB gun at the officer. Law enforcement sources report that Campbell had a lengthy criminal record with at least 22 prior arrests, including an incident in 2023 where he assaulted police officers by throwing objects at them.
On the day of the shooting, Campbell had reportedly expressed to family members his desire to be killed by police. Witnesses noted that he struggled with mental health issues, highlighting a deeper context surrounding the incident. Video footage shows officers instructing Campbell to drop the weapon before the shots were fired, leading to his death at Staten Island University Hospital shortly thereafter.
