The Cheboygan City Council is set to consider a proposed ordinance allowing a special deer hunt within city limits to tackle increasing deer populations that have led to more vehicle accidents and significant landscaping damage. City Manager Dan Sabolsky notes that local concerns, particularly from the Seedums Garden Club after their rose garden was destroyed, have prompted this initiative as part of a broader strategy during the state’s regular archery season.
The hunting plan includes restrictions such as the requirement to use only compound or crossbows and to hunt from designated tree stands on properties of at least three acres. Hunters must also pass a shooting proficiency test, and the focus will initially be on culling does before permits for bucks are issued. With the backing of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Sabolsky anticipates that this approach may enhance local wildlife management and ultimately reduce damage to the community.
