Aurora, Colorado, is grappling with the aftermath of a police shooting that claimed the life of 37-year-old Rajon Belt on Saturday night. Following a failed DUI stop, Belt exited his vehicle and approached an officer aggressively, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon, resulting in three shots being fired. The incident has ignited a wave of emotion within the community, with residents expressing conflicting views on the officer’s response, emphasizing a desire for accountability and reflection on police practices.
Belt, a father of seven and a student at Pickens Technical College, was remembered by family and friends during a candlelight vigil, where his son described him as a “good person” whose death was unjust. A makeshift memorial now honors Belt near the scene of the shooting, filled with candles and flowers, as community members call for answers and better methods for de-escalating tense situations. Aurora police have initiated a full investigation and have yet to release body camera footage or the officer’s identity.
