A gun rights group, joined by six plaintiffs, has filed a lawsuit against Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Philip Weiser, contesting new regulations on assault rifle ownership. The laws, set to take effect on August 1, 2026, require prospective owners of semiautomatic firearms to complete background checks and safety courses, aiming to curb mass shootings that have tragically claimed 82 Lives in the state over the past decade, including high-profile incidents at Columbine and Boulder.
The lawsuit argues that these restrictions violate the Second Amendment, asserting that historical precedents supporting such regulations are inadequate. Among the plaintiffs is a survivor of domestic violence who currently carries a small semiautomatic handgun, as well as a 19-year-old who is now barred from purchasing a semiautomatic firearm due to the age limitation. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for gun rights in Colorado and beyond, raising key questions about the balance between public safety and constitutional rights.
