A Butte family is raising awareness about gun safety following the tragic death of 18-year-old Aric Lewis from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred while Aric was hanging out with friends in a remote area near Melrose, where marijuana and alcohol were reportedly factors in the shooting, which his family characterized as accidental. His older sister, Hope Lucier, emphasizes the critical nature of responsible firearm handling, stating, “If one good thing can come from this, we’d want to show just how important it is to handle guns safely.”
Aric, a popular recent high school graduate who enjoyed camping and writing songs, passed away shortly after receiving first aid from friends before help arrived. As his family prepares to honor his life at a celebration event in Butte, they hope their message about the dangers of mixing substances with firearms will resonate with others. “If you are handling firearms when you are sober, you need to be responsible… If you are not sober, then you should not handle a firearm,” Lucier adds, highlighting a crucial call for awareness around gun safety in the community.
