In an innovative effort to combat the alarming rise in school shootings, Florida will pilot a program using non-lethal drones in select school districts. This initiative, backed by $557,000 from Governor Ron DeSantis, aims to deploy drones that can respond to threats within seconds, allowing for rapid intervention while minimizing risks to human officers.

Each drone box, containing six units, costs about $15,000, and schools are encouraged to acquire multiple boxes for adequate protection. As three districts prepare for this unprecedented program, the chosen locations are expected to be announced in the fall, with drone operations set to commence in 2026.
