Study Links Stand Your Ground Laws to Increased Homicides

A new study reveals that Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws, designed to expand the legal right to use lethal force in self-defense, might be contributing to a rise in homicides across the United States. In states with SYG laws, researchers found homicide rates increased by an average of 9.9%, with more significant spikes reported in states like Alabama and Florida, where the increase reached as high as 33%. This challenges the notion that SYG laws enhance safety and protection for individuals.

The origins of these laws trace back to English common law’s Castle Doctrine, which evolved into modern interpretations that lack a duty to retreat. The study highlights that while SYG laws offer greater legal protections for those defending themselves, they may inadvertently encourage a more lethal response in confrontational situations, thereby escalating violence rather than mitigating it. With pressing implications for public safety, understanding the effectiveness of these laws remains critical.
