Chicago Mayor Blames Gun Trafficking for Violence

During a recent statement alongside the Illinois Governor, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the connection between gun violence in the city and gun trafficking from states with looser regulations. He claims that “for every shooting in Chicago, there is a gun trafficker in Mississippi making money,” highlighting that the majority of firearms involved in crimes are sourced from states like Indiana, Louisiana, and Mississippi rather than Illinois itself.

Mayor Johnson argues that efforts within Chicago, including enhancements to local law enforcement and community interventions, cannot fully mitigate the violence as long as gun trafficking persists across state lines. He asserts the responsibility lies with the federal government to confront this issue, stating that shutting down illegal gun stores often leads to new establishments popping up, further complicating the situation. Johnson’s remarks call for a broader strategy to effectively address the ongoing gun violence crisis in Chicago.
