Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) announces the launch of a new gun safety curriculum across all district schools, addressing a critical need for firearm education amid rising gun violence. The initiative follows Tennessee legislation mandating that local education agencies provide age-appropriate instruction on gun safety, with the curriculum focusing on four essential rules: stop, don’t touch, leave the area, and tell an adult.
This effort is particularly timely, as recent data indicates more than 530 gun-related crimes have occurred in the Memphis area so far this year. MSCS Interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond emphasizes the importance of this curriculum in fostering safe learning environments and community discussions, with forums scheduled for September 18-19 to engage families and the community in continuing these vital conversations at home.
