A Watsonville man, Javier Lopez, faces multiple felony charges after he threatened a mother and her child with an assault rifle in their home. The incident, which occurred in the 200 block of Ford Street, resulted in a police response that saw Lopez spotted nearby shortly after the threat was made, prompting an extensive search.
During the pursuit, Lopez discarded the loaded weapon into a slough before being apprehended by officers, who were aided by the California Highway Patrol and a drone team. The assault rifle was subsequently recovered, and Lopez is now booked into Santa Cruz County Jail without bail, charged with offenses including burglary and carrying a loaded firearm.
