West Michigan Students Demand Action Against Gun Violence

Students from Rockford High School and Portage Central High School in West Michigan participate in a nationwide walkout to protest gun violence, expressing their urgent demand for change. This event, organized by Students Demand Action, follows a tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis that resulted in two fatalities and several injuries among students.

Chanting slogans such as “books not bullets” and “protect kids not guns,” the students highlight a common frustration that gun violence should not be a political issue. As junior Brayden Burgess emphasizes, the need for legislative action transcends party lines, stating, “We should get this done to keep kids safe.” Their powerful message seeks to draw attention to the fear experienced by students and the urgent need for change in the narrative surrounding mental health and safety in schools.
