Survivors of Maine Mass Shooting Sue U.S. Army

Survivors and families of victims from Maine’s deadliest mass shooting are suing the federal government, contending that the U.S. Army could have prevented the tragedy, which resulted in 18 deaths. The lawsuit claims Army officials ignored clear signs of deteriorating mental health in shooter Robert Card, referencing multiple documented incidents that demonstrated his violent tendencies and disturbing behavior prior to the October 2023 attack.

Filed in federal court, the legal action points to serious failures by both Army personnel and the local law enforcement that overlooked numerous warning signs, including a “hit list” Card allegedly created. The suit further alleges negligence on the part of the Army for not following through on promises to remove Card’s firearms, ultimately contributing to what they describe as “one of the most preventable mass tragedies in American history.”
