Commission Meeting Highlights Wildlife Research Efforts

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) recently convened to discuss vital research and outreach programs as hunting seasons approach. Notably, fisheries biologist Jeff Quinn presented findings from a telemetry project aimed at tracking the Alabama shad, an anadromous species navigating a 600-mile migration route from local rivers to the Gulf Coast. The project reveals significant challenges, with a survival rate of only 10 to 16 percent for fish attempting to bypass manmade barriers.

Additionally, the meeting showcased enhancements in the Deer Management Assistance Program, which has expanded to include eight biologists dedicated to supporting private landowners with deer herd management. Over the past year, this program recorded a 6 percent increase in biodata submissions, representing 1.4 million acres—a significant achievement for wildlife management in Arkansas. As the AGFC prepares for the upcoming hunting seasons, these initiatives underscore its commitment to sustainable wildlife practices and habitat restoration.
