Durham Declares Itself ‘Fourth Amendment Workplace’

The Durham City Council in North Carolina unanimously adopts a resolution declaring the city a “Fourth Amendment Workplace,” responding to what officials describe as “unconstitutional” ICE raids. The unanimous vote comes after reports of ICE agents appearing at the Durham County Courthouse, causing alarm among residents and highlighting fears within immigrant communities targeted under federal enforcement policies.

The resolution underscores the city’s commitment to uphold constitutional rights, directing city staff to enhance training on the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. Mayor Leo Williams expressed the urgency of the measure, stating that while local leaders cannot override federal actions, they can advocate for the rights of all residents and combat the anxiety faced by children and families in their community.
