Senate Advances Bill to Restrict Assault Rifles

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Justice, and Public Safety has advanced a significant series of bills, including one that seeks to ban assault rifles and large-capacity magazines in the Virgin Islands. This legislation, sponsored by Sen. Clifford A. Joseph Sr., aims to enhance community safety by restricting access to what are defined as “weapons of war,” while ensuring that lawful gun ownership remains intact, according to Joseph’s statements during the committee meeting.

Furthermore, the committee also voted to prohibit synthetic THC products, aiming to safeguard public health, particularly for children and adolescents. Testimony from health officials underscored the dangers associated with these substances, which can lead to severe medical issues. With the approval of these measures, lawmakers are taking steps addressing both gun violence and the risks of unregulated THC products, prompting the need for further discussions on public safety and regulation in the territory.
