Deer Population Declines in Connecticut for 2024

Connecticut’s deer population and fatalities from both hunting and vehicle collisions have decreased in 2024, according to the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The report indicates a total of 9,768 deer were killed last year, including 898 from car accidents, marking a 7% decline in harvested deer compared to the previous year.

While spending on hunting gear rose to $6.3 million, a notable increase from $5.7 million in 2023, the number of hunting permits issued fell to 40,462. The report attributes the decline to factors such as increasing predator populations and fewer hunters, prompting state officials to consider new strategies for deer management in Connecticut.
