Eight-Year-Old Gun Violence Survivor Launches Advocacy

Onyx Sands, an eight-year-old survivor paralyzed from the waist down due to a road-rage shooting, is set to launch her advocacy campaign, “Onyx Strong: Advocating for Safe and Healthy Kids,” aimed at supporting children affected by gun violence. Scheduled for later this year or early 2026, the initiative will focus on providing resources and community support for young survivors of shootings, a critical need highlighted by Louisville’s alarming rate of approximately 500 non-fatal shootings annually.

During a press conference, Onyx revealed her chosen campaign colors and expressed her excitement about talking with others, emphasizing her desire to make the world a safer place for kids. Her mother, Chyna Sands, noted the ongoing challenges they face in coping with the aftermath of the shooting and the importance of connecting with peers who share similar experiences. Onyx’s story and her commitment to advocating for safety promise to inspire others in the community and beyond.
