Philly Introduces Law Against Straw Gun Purchases

In a landmark move, Philadelphia has become the first city in the nation to require gun shops to post signs warning against straw purchasing, a practice where individuals buy firearms on behalf of someone barred from owning them. The law, signed by Mayor Cherelle Parker, mandates that stores inform customers that engaging in straw purchasing can lead to a decade in prison and fines up to $250,000.

City officials highlight that raising awareness about this issue is crucial, as many individuals may not understand the legal implications. Notably, data shows that women have increasingly been implicated in straw purchasing cases, prompting advocacy groups to educate them on the crime. As the city grapples with gun violence, which has seen significant declines in recent years, this proactive approach aims to contribute to safer gun ownership practices.
