Virginia’s Underutilized Red Flag Law Raises Concerns

Virginia’s red flag law, designed to prevent gun violence and suicides, sees limited usage, with only 1,994 emergency substantial risk orders issued since its inception in July 2020. Localities like Fairfax County have actively engaged with the law, securing 362 orders, while many others have failed to utilize this crucial tool, leaving communities vulnerable to potential tragedies.

Recent incidents highlight the urgent need for broader application of this law, as devastating events, such as a shooting in Crozet that resulted in three fatalities, could have been forestalled with proactive intervention. Experts indicate that every 17 to 23 emergency orders issued can potentially save one life, underscoring the law’s effectiveness while prompting advocates to call for increased awareness among residents, law enforcement, and mental health professionals about its importance.
