The Minnesota National Guard’s 34th Infantry Division is among the first units to receive the Army’s new M250 machine gun, designed to replace the older M249 model. During a recent training session at Camp Ripley, soldiers began familiarizing themselves with this next-generation weapon as the Army rolls out the M250 as part of its modern combat equipment initiative.
This lightweight automatic rifle, which utilizes new 6.8mm rounds, is approximately four pounds lighter than its predecessor, yet provides enhanced firepower for infantry squads. As the M250 enters full deployment, it reflects a significant shift in U.S. military armament, raising interest from allied forces including the Israeli Defense Forces. The updated design comes alongside the new M7 rifle, further evolving the Army’s close combat capabilities.
