The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) has announced the establishment of the Snowden Waterfowl Center of Excellence, a significant initiative aimed at advancing waterfowl and wetlands conservation. This new center, supported by $7 million in public and private funding, is designed to elevate Arkansas’s role as a national leader in waterfowl research and education, reflecting the state’s cultural and economic ties to duck hunting, which generates over $300 million annually during the hunting season.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, alongside state leaders, highlighted the importance of the center not only for education and research but also for preserving hunting traditions for future generations. Dr. Douglas Osborne will lead the center as its inaugural director, emphasizing its unique status as the only “Center of Excellence” for waterfowl in the entire country. The initiative intentionally strives to attract top-tier students and researchers dedicated to conservation efforts, promising extensive scholarship opportunities and further enhancing Arkansas’s influence in the fields of conservation and natural resource management.
