A lawsuit filed against the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) alleges that the organization secretly collected personal information from millions of gun owners to create targeted political advertisements dating back to the 2000 elections. The suit, brought by two gun owners, claims that the NSSF unjustly benefited from this data obtained without consent from consumers who provided their information for warranty purposes.
According to the complaint, the NSSF’s database amassed over 5.5 million records by 2002, using customer data obtained from several major gun manufacturers and even outdoor retail giant Cabela’s. The lawsuit highlights that this extensive database was utilized for political campaigns, stating that it played a crucial role in the tight race that brought George W. Bush to the presidency in 2000. As the case unfolds, it raises significant questions regarding privacy and consent in data usage within the firearms industry.
