Kimberly School District Permits Staff to Carry Firearms

For the first time, the Kimberly School District in Idaho allows vetted staff members to carry concealed firearms on school property, a policy approved by district leaders over a year ago. Superintendent Luke Schroeder emphasizes that this decision stems from a desire to protect students and cites a study showing that in numerous school shooting incidents, response times for law enforcement can exceed critical thresholds, often taking five minutes or longer to arrive on scene.

Under the new policy, staff wishing to carry firearms must meet stringent qualifications, including passing physical assessments, demonstrating firearm competency, and undergoing a psychological evaluation. This initiative, inspired by a similar policy at Xavier Charter School, aims not only to enhance immediate safety but also to serve as a deterrent against potential threats, as underscored by Schroeder’s assertion that active shooters often target less secure campuses. The district has chosen not to disclose how many staff members have obtained approval to carry firearms.
