LDS Church Upholds Gun Ban Amid Safety Concerns

After a recent attack on a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has reiterated its gun ban and safety protocols, emphasizing the need for worshippers to feel “welcome and safe in sacred spaces.” Although the church’s recent communication encourages members to seek guidance from the Spirit in implementing these policies, it faces pushback from some congregants, with a petition currently gathering signatures urging leaders to allow “responsible, law-abiding” members to carry firearms during services.

In its message, the church outlines standard safety measures, such as being aware of one’s surroundings and having emergency response protocols in place. This has sparked debate within the community, as various studies indicate a link between increased gun access and higher gun-related deaths. With a member initiating a petition that has garnered 92 signatures to date, the discussion continues about the balance between security and safety in places of worship amidst rising concerns following the tragic event.
