Waterfowl Hunters Urged to Combat Invasive Species

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) actively urges waterfowl hunters to protect state water bodies from the spread of harmful invasive species like zebra mussels and giant salvinia. These invasive organisms can degrade waterfowl habitats and severely impede access for hunters if not properly managed.

Simple preventive measures, such as cleaning, draining, and drying boats and gear before moving between lakes, can significantly impact the spread of these species. Invasive plants like giant salvinia can double in coverage in just a week, disrupting local ecosystems and threatening the habitat of native wildlife. With zebra mussels now found in 39 Texas lakes, hunters are reminded that transporting these invasive species is illegal and may incur fines up to $500.
