No charges for Utah officer in fatal shooting case

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has announced that no criminal charges will be filed against a police officer who fatally shot a suspect believed to have killed his parents in West Valley City. The decision comes after an investigation concluded that the officer’s use of deadly force was likely justified under Utah law, as there was a reasonable belief that the officer acted to prevent serious injury or death.

The suspect, 35-year-old Erik Bertelsen, was implicated in the deaths of his parents, Terri and Kerry Bertelsen, who were discovered during a welfare check initiated by family members days earlier. As police confronted Erik at their home, a shooting incident occurred, leading to his death and prompting a broader examination of the circumstances surrounding this tragic case.
