Most Guns in Mexico Come from U.S. Government Sales

A recent investigation by a former ATF agent, John Dodson, reveals that the majority of firearms recovered at crime scenes in Mexico are not smuggled from the U.S. civilian market, but are instead legally purchased by the Mexican government from U.S. manufacturers. This finding contradicts the widely held belief that American gun sales contribute significantly to Mexico’s violence, a narrative bolstered by a 2021 lawsuit from the Mexican government claiming up to 90% of crime guns trace back to the U.S.

Dodson asserts that stopping these government sales could dramatically reduce cartel-related gun violence, suggesting that 70% of cartel-bound firearms could be eliminated with a single policy change. He emphasizes that the misconception surrounding U.S. gun laws and their impact on Mexico’s crime rates distracts from the true issue of government-sanctioned gun sales. This revelation invites a reevaluation of the ongoing debate over U.S. gun control policies.
