Former D.C. Violence Interrupter Charged with Drug Offenses

Levon Williams, a former D.C. violence interrupter, walks out of court facing charges of illegally carrying a firearm and possessing synthetic drugs with intent to distribute. His September arrest uncovered more than two pounds of synthetic marijuana and a fully loaded firearm concealed in his underwear while he was in a parked SUV in Southeast D.C., an area notorious for crime.

This alarming incident highlights the challenges within D.C.’s violence prevention initiatives, as Williams was employed by Hillcrest Children and Family Services, a contractor for the city’s Office of Neighborhood Safety. After his arrest, he was terminated from his position, raising concerns about the effectiveness and scrutiny of the violence interrupter program amid a recent pattern of similar arrests. His case is set for another hearing on December 16.
